Although Bob Lutz, Vice-Chaiman of GM, recently reported that GM RWD vehicles were being put on hold, it looks as though the Corvette SS managed to slip through. The Car Connection has posted spy photos of the new 2009 Corvette SS "Blue Devil". This uber Corvette will go against the Porsche Carerra GT and Ferrari.
There is no word yet on the final specs, although it is rumored to have between 650-700 horsepower and it will probably go for about $100k, at least. The engine may be a supercharged version of the base Corvette engine. The car will debut sometime later this year.
According to Lutz, "This thing has so much power that we have to explore a dynamic envelope that we've never explored before. . . . We're really into a speed and power realm that General Motors has never been in before. We're way up there with Porsche Carrera GTs and Ferraris."
Will this car actually be a strong competitor to Porsche and Ferrari?

Yeah, they better dump at least $5,000 into the interior if they honestly expect that to happen. I mean come'on, even people who spend $50k + on a regular Corvette would surely spend a few thousand more for an Audi like interior. This car isn't a price point Cobalt for Christs sake.

I'm sorry, but there's a world of difference between a Corvette and a Ferrari or Porsche. It's like these kids who put all this flash and money into their Civic EX. It doesn't change the fact that it's still a Civic. All GM is doing is making a car that competes with what it's always competed with, Viper's and Mustangs (back and forth with the Viper and usually beating a Mustang.) Ford is coming out with the Mustang GT500KR again, which is what this is going to square up against. Ferrari's of all model's and the Carrera GT are in a class above Corvette. And that's not to mention the interior...

GM fails to realize that a Ferrari and Porsche are more than just a car that can go fast. They have style and class, something you don't get when you buy a Vette (unless it's certain classic ones).

But style and class as an addition to horsepower is not everything for the ultimate in performance. Being a light weight is a key element, too. And that's were we see some major changes in this corvette that GM had innovated. Check out the roof. Even given the rough edges you see on some prototypes, this roof still doesn't look right. Some suggests that carbon fiber is the material for the roof, lending its strength to the structure and light weight to the car's mass which is always an advantage to a car. That hood covering is just as important. It covers the bulge (and air scoop, too?) for the supercharger, and it may be built out of carbon fiber also for strength.

i think of a corvette as if someone want to take a revenge on a guy who drives a ferrari or a porsche. for $70 thousand dollar you geta car that would be compiting with lamborghini and all other europe sports car i would get a corvette and GM also give 10 years warranty, not eurpopeans.

When GM says they will compete with Porsche and Ferrari, I can say with confidence in which they were referring to was strickly power and performance. So all you Porsche and Ferrari lovers needs to relax.... your cars will still remain exclusive... no need to get ensecure.
