2009 Hyundai RWD Coupe Spy Photos...Can Hyundai Actually Compete with BMW?

Spy Photographers have caught what appears to be Hyundai's new 2009 RWD Coupe in South Korea. It has been reported that the automaker plans on releasing numerous vehicles that will be built on the BH platform. That includes the new Genesis sedan, this coupe and a possible truck.

All "BH" vehicles will use the new Tau V8 that puts out an estimated 300 horsepower.

There is some speculation that the vehicle pictured here instead the new Tiburon. But it is probably not true since a RWD coupe that is designed to go against BMW and Infiniti would have be a hard sell with the Tiburon name.

It is also interesting that the engine in this vehicle is not actually a V8, but a 4-cyl turbo.

Do you think a RWD coupe from Hyundai would be able to compete in the same league as the BMW 3-Series and Infiniti G37?

hunter:

hmm seeming intresting but they should put the azera engine in it, cause that is a big ass engine

retniap:

Looks like a Jaguar XK !?!?!

mf:

They have a 4 cylinder turbo motor, cheap interior and there is no proof other that this is rwd.

People just want to believe because of the commercials that Hyundai is going to do something special.

Keep in mind Hyundai can barely compete with cars in their class, let alone trying to compete with the luxury cars they've been comparing with on commercials.

This is the next Tiburon.

e36_Jeff:

actually there is pretty concrete proof that this is a RWD car. the engine is situated with the cylinders running front to back, not side to side, there are exactly 0 cars on the market that have an engine running front to back that are FWD, so this is likely RWD or AWD.

and actually being a person who owns a BMW, the cheap interior is a big turnoff, however, the interior of a test mule usually bears little relation to the final product, and I do see alot of covered up spots in the interior pics

gillis:

ummm im pretty sure there are quite a few fwd cars that a have an engine running "front to back" my passat does and so do quite a few VeeeDubs

e36_Jeff:

hmm, i was unaware of that, tho looking at some pics I see that you are correct, but even given that, then engine looks like it is pretty far back in the engine bay to be FWD, i noticed that in all the pics of VWs I saw the engine looked like it was pushed as far forward as possible, and looking at the car, it would appear that the front wheels are far enough forward to make getting the drivetrain in there difficult.

Boosted Tib:

I dont know how many people have spent time in a Tibs interior but I can tell you that mine doesnt seem cheap at all. Good quality leather and well positioned controls, the doors shut with a good convincing thump and its got power everything.

This may or may not be coming out to compete with say BMW or even Nissan for that matter, but people are still caught in the "Pony Era" and dont give time or consideration to what Hyundai has evolved into. If you dont like Hyundai dont buy one, I personally do but dont see myself buying another now that ive built the car I have now.

Remy LeBeau:

I keep seeing people say "new Tiburon" to which someone else says "no, it's RWD!" - have any of you stopped to think that it could be a new RWD Tiburon?

JohnnyNismo:

Wow!! If thats a RWD 4cyl turbo Tiburon then it'll basically fill the void left by the Nissan 240sx/180sx/Silvia's. I might actually give it a test drive and see how it compares to my 1992 240sx RS13. I hope its less than 2900lbs and has 50/50 weight distribution like mine atleast.

Rabbit:

The engine running front to back means that it is most likely rear wheel drive. The Lancer on the other hand is all wheel drive and has an engine that is mounted side to side.

And yes that is a 4cyl turbo powerplant.

Maybe Hyundai is repositioning the Tiburon to compete against the likes of the Lancer EVO and Imprezza STI. A 4cyl turbo car would fit nicely in the 30K price range (or slightly under that range in Hyundai's case).

DJPSystem:

I talk lately with a Hyundai dealer and he told me pretty much the same thing that Rabbit said. The new Tiburon or call it wahetever you want suppose to have 300hp and they suppose to compete with Imprezza. I don't think Hyundai want to compete with BMW with this new Tiburon as in fact Tiburon is more a coupe style and BMW goes more with the sedan style. I don't own a Tiburon but I sit in it a couple of time and I don't think you can call the interior of the Tiburon cheap. I even think that it got a interior cleaner than most of the car in is range price and even more pricy.

Noya:

BMW...no.

EVO, STi, 350z, and the white trash Ferrari's...YES!

Does Hyundai still have any ties with Mitsubishi?

I know some of their older cars (90's) has Mitsubishi running gear (engines, trannies, etc.).

I also notice that the latest Eclipse has a 3.8L V-6, as does the Azera. They might have different heads, though (SOHC vs DOHC).

Either way, if this car perfoms close enough to a 350z, I think they'll have a winner on their hands.

devdevil85:

I took my 2005 Hyundai Tiburon GT into to get it serviced and I saw a 2007 Tiburon and said Wow! Then they told me that the 2008 was going to be RWD & have 300HP so I know it's coming out just from that statement given by Certified Hyundai Service technicians.

jsmoon202:

This as far as the information I've collected is the Hyundai RWD based on the Hyundai Genesis Concept. Hyundai has released that it will be a V8 Variable timed engine (first V8 by Hyundai) pushing well over 300 hp. It is also confirmed that it is a RWD. It is aimed to compete with the BMW 335i and the Infiniti G37.

Turboed?? I doubt it...but it will not be a 4cyl turboed engine....it is a confirmed V8....

woody:

Rubbish

They've already confirmed that the V8 will not feature in the new Tiburon. In the BH yes most probably.

This will from what is being said feature the 4cyl Theta Turbo which is currently being developed (around 220bhp) and the 3.8 Lambda V6 (around 300bhp)

JO JO:

WELL.......

ALMOST NONE OF YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT. THATS THE GOOD PART !!! ITS NOT HYUNDAI'S FIRST V8, AND IT WILL BE RWD 4CYL TURBO OR A V6 AND NOT THE SAME ONE AS THE SONATA. IT WILL BE A COUPE VERSION OF THE GENESIS WHICH IS NO LONGER A CONCEPT. AND ALL THEY HAVE RIGHT NOW ARE CLAY MODELS. THE PICTURE HERE IS OF A 07 TIBURON. THOSE OF YOU WHO DO NOT ACCEPT A HYUNDAI AS TRUE COMPETITOR JUST HAVE YOUR YOUR BRAINS OFF.

We all know that that yellow spy pic of the tiburon is a concept and will never be for sale to the consumer, no way in hell!! but I do think that hyundai will have to come out with something that is pretty special afterall the Mugen Civic is coming out and some pretty awesome other ones as well. I will definentaly be keeping my eye out for it, good luck hyundai cant wait to see what you got for us racers!!!

Jeremie:

>> there are exactly 0 cars on the market that have an engine running front to back that are FWD

What about the Dodge Intrepid ?
Longitudinal engine, FWD !!

Can't wait to see this car comming ! RWD + V8 + Manual transmission are winner !!!!!!!!!!!!

L.Vines:

After researching considerably the hyundai product in 2007-2008 and driving and comparing the list of safety features and warranty with all hyundais 100,000 miles or 10 yrs. have found the options to excell above the overpriced vehicles in their class. Btw Hyundai is an exceptionally safe and comfortable ride unsurpassed by any bmw i have ever owned or ridden. I would much rather have my investment covered by an exceptional warranty above any other product on the market rather than worried about what my neighbor has in his driveway.

Kyle:

Woe... alot of heat in here huh? I am a avid mustang owner, and auto enthusiast, yet i traded in a 93 olds cutlass supreme for a 06 sonata. by far the best thing i have done in a long time. unbeliveable traction management, since i live in wisconsin. as far as the tcm goes, i have had every light on in the dashboard and still drove straight, and i only hope that they continue to enhance their systems and place them in a car that will use them more often.

NOW...
as far as the genesis is concerned.
has anyone actually gone to a hyundai dealer in the last month?
all in formation you need for the genesis is there and for anyone to see. the sedan is out with a V6 running 3.8 liter which is not in a sonata, i am pretty sure they are a 3.3 liter. and as far as the V8 is concerned, hell yes is this thing hot!!!!!
4.6 liter pushing 375 hp, more than the V6's 290 hp.
the coupe is coming as a genesis platformed shorter version with the V6 RWD, optioning the V8. and YES, as much as my knowledge procedes me, it is said to compete with the mustangs and corvettes, mot so much BMW's, that is more of the sedan.

please feel free to continue to comment as it is entertaining as well as infomational.

incase you are wondering, when that hot little coupe pops out and you know the V8 is singing, I am leaving my mustang to another for a chance a an exciting and bold me ride of speed.

thank you.....
