It has been reported several times that the new BMW 335i actually produces more power than is stated on paper. BMW states that the 335i coupe and sedan have 300 horsepower at the flywheel, although according to several dyno tests the car actually puts out between 275-300 horsepower at the wheels. Using simple math it is estimated that the actual horsepower at the flywheel is 350-375 horsepower. Those are exciting numbers!
Well now it looks like the upcoming 2008 Infiniti G37 Coupe has achieved similar results.
The new Infiniti G37 VQ37 engine has 330 horsepower and lb-ft of torque on paper. The new engine is rated as only having 31 more horsepower than the old 3.5L engine, but it actually puts out 51 more horsepower at the dyno. Taking into account similar drivetrain losses as the BMW, the G37 actually has 365 horsepower at the flywheel. Those numbers are right in the middle of the 335i results.
I guess that is one more reason to wait for the new Infiniti before you sign the check for the BMW.

In Europe, power is rated at the wheels. Each engine is a bit different and gets special software to match exact power (in this case 306 HP). This ingine is buit into 3 an 5 series (for now) and in both cases has 306 HP. Since 3 and 5 series have different exhaust and transmissions engines get different software to meet exact 306 HP.

Would never even think of comparing, the class, style, quality of a this class of sports cars to BMW,....unless it is Italian or other German make.... I am sure a difference of 10-20hp, would not make a gigantic difference in performance, but the elegance and looks and feel is far beyond simple comparison....:):):)

I would have to agree with Peter.
The Infinities that I have looked at are no where near BMW levels of quality.
Now on the other hand Lexus is right there, maybe even a smidge above, but the lack of a manual transmission is too large of a let down.

BMW's quality has been far worst than Infiniti the past few years!!

Don't even talk about reliability and durability for the BMWs. Sure they may to nice when new, but try owning a BMW over 50k miles and you'll see all the issues. Leasing is the way to go.
Even from a performance standpoint, other publishers just can't seem to let go of their favoritism for the BMW, even though the performance numbers show who is the clear winner. They'll still pick the BMW and find mostly excuses, not reasons to back their claims.
The IS350 stomps all over the new 335, but I agree with Noya, the IS350 can't be a true sports sedan without the manual.

The 3 series of the last few years have been utterly uninspired. They are BORING. This is in contrast to the G37 (and G35 sedan) which is one of the best looking cars of the past 5 years.

Now, if Infiniti could just get rid of those pesky, prejudiced auto magazine writers... They might actually stand a chance...

This conversation about quality is interesting, though. Many people discuss quality and mean the textures, mechanical feel, the smells and the looks. Other people discuss quality and only mean reliability. Others talk about quality and mean durability. They are all separate measures, they are all indications of quality, and none are mutually exclusive. I believe the "BMW > Infiniti" quality guys meant visual / tactile quality. I believe the "Infiniti > BMW" quality guys meant reliability.
I think you're both right.
But I'd still rather drive a G37 than a 335 any day... Now M3, that's a different story...

There isn't a comparable infiniti in that class anyways.
Is the 2008 CTS the only comparable American sedan? This is the class I'm looking at (sedan) for a car next year, and although I'm not very loyal to the American car makers, I'd at least be willing to give them a chance.

This is the car for 2008 i've been waiting for, added new features and well equipped with reliable Nissan brake rotors as the most important parts of a vehicle’s braking system.

NoDos, you can get the IS350 in manual, my roommate has the 250 in manual (she liked the Lexus, but didn't need all the ponies in the 350, but ONLY drives manual). It's actually less expensive, but you do have to special order...took about 3 months to arrive.

"Sure they may to nice when new, but try owning a BMW over 50k miles and you'll see all the issues. Leasing is the way to go."
My current BMW has 181,000 miles and it has only needed the thermostat replaced and the power windows fixed.
Last one died at 262 due to rust. When it went the tranny was just as good as my mom's then-new Jetta.
It is all the electronic mumbo jumbo that has me turned off these days. I prefer the manual dials for HVAC, a standard 1 DIN audio unit, ect. The G37 is BEAUTIFUL, but I think (even vs the 3) I may be holding out for a 135i.

My current BMW, a '96 328IS, is about to hit 189,000 and the engine and transmission still run excellent. So far I've only had to replace the waterpump/thermostat. Right now the side passenger window doesn't work but it isn't a big deal and would be easily fixed if I just took the time.

Benji,
You can't get the IS350 in manual, only the slower 250. I don't know what Lexus was thinking.

I read all these posts with people claiming poor reliability of BMWs and wonder where they are getting their info. I know several people who have owned BMWs for years with high miles and very few problems. Sure, there are always some lemons but it's just totally inaccurate to say that the build quality of BMWs is poor overall. It's funny how people's bias toward certain cars clouds their objectivity. I find it amusing that people like to take swipes at BMWs by saying that the testers are biased and blah, blah. Yeah I forgot, they were paid off by BMW to give such rave reviews. It has absolutely nothing to do with truth right?. Yeah right. It's very laughable how certain people think..

Folks !! BIMMER's are for leasing, Infiniti/nissan(s) are for keeps.
Oh, for those EURO-car fans, reliability starts with the simple & basic oil changes done. Twice a year vs. 4 times a year, which one gets the better interval maintenance; simple enough.
