2008 Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen Appeals to the Boring Crowd!

The 2008 VW Jetta SportWagen has been unveiled today at the New York Auto Show. The new wagon version of the popular Jetta will be offered with three engine configurations, a 2.5L five-cylinder, the 2.0T four-cylinder and a 2.0L diesel engine.

The 2.5L has been upgraded and now produces 170hp, up from 150hp. The main plus with the wagon is that it offers 32.8 cubic ft of storage space and 66.9 cubic ft with the rear seat folded down. There is also an optional fold-flat front passenger seat that aides with loading long items. A panoramic sunroof is also a new option.

I'm surprised that they brought this here, considering that the last Jetta wagon performed so poorly. The rear-end styling of this car looks like it is missing something and nothing like a typical VW. Very boring... This must have been what the new VW design chief had in mind when he said that the company has "lost its way."

This is a perfect example of a waste of time and money by Volkswagen. They need to knock themselves over the head with something heavy and realize that no one will buy a car as ugly as this. It just looks like a VW Rabbit caught in a trash compressor. Styling is boring and depressing, and interior design is only good for people who want to commit suicide. Something more modern and flashy Volkswagen Jetta parts - http://www.alloemcarparts.com/specials/volkswagen-jetta-parts.html should be the design for the next generation VW.

Shougun, thanks for your opinion. Unfortunately, the rest of the world doesn't agree with you. VW is the best-selling automaker in Europe, and the Jetta is among its best selling models.

In North America, top selling cars are not known to be anything but "boring and depressing" -- when's the last time you were excited by the look of a Camry or Accord? Obviously not everyone prioritizes flashiness in their automotive purchasing decision. Thank goodness VW offers a cleanly styled vehicle instead of offering cheap plastic tack-on garbage.

Shoughun:

I respect your views moto. Oh well "to each its own." I still admire some of Volkswagen's work of art nevertheless. This just does not appeal to me that's it.

Adolfo:

I am personally looking forward for this model, a Jetta wagon that is, which I was in Germany this summer and test drove the equivalent (Golf Variant) I look forward to it because of the style, for some reason though this car looks ugly (probably the angle) but in a different angle this car looks awesome. But then again, if it doesnt look like the golf variant I will end up getting a Rabbit diesel, if they come out, otherwise I'll keep on piling miles on my 04 Jetta : ) schtuss!

FYI to whoever wrote the original article, the last Jetta wagon did fairly well, and if North America weren't so full of sick-minded people who use Suburbans and Excursions to transport one person to work, it would have done better yet. Vehicles like the Jetta wagon make up a large percentage of the fleet in parts of the world where people actually care about getting where they need to go while using as little of the world's resources as possible. The new Jetta wagon looks ok, and with the new TDI it will also work very well and get exceptional fuel economy.
