2008 Jeep Liberty Ditches its Cute-Ute Styling

Chrysler has unveiled the all-new 2008 Jeep Liberty at the New York Auto Show today. The new SUV is built on the same platform as the new Dodge Nitro, which you can easily tell.

The new Liberty adopts many of the styling cues from its larger siblings, especially the Commander.

For 2008 the Liberty receives an all new interior and exterior styling, that ditches the "cute-ute" styling of the previous generation. The SUV uses the same 3.7L V6 from the current generation and provides 210 hp and 235 lb.ft. of torque. Fuel economy has been improved 16mpg city and 22 on the highway. A six-speed manual and a four-speed auto are the transmission options.

The unique option on the new generation is the "Sky Slider" which is essentially a canvas roof that slides...very similar to the roofs that old VW Bugs had.

This new Liberty looks too much like the Nitro, I wish they had made this model more distinct. Also the interior quality is subpar, once again. When will they learn that badge engineering and poor quality will not sell cars?

Is it me, or the car is really ugly... ?!

waffle911:

No no no, you've got it all wrong...
The Nitro was based on the last generation Liberty's platform, but now the liberty is taking back by stealing the read-end sheetmetal. Add in the fact that the liberty alienated Cherokee owners at its introduction, you get the poor, misguided attempt at attracting purists to a whole new breed of illegitimate lineage. Oh, the things I would do if I were in charge of Jeep... (save their sinking @$$3$, that's what.)
Note to Jeep: No one likes cheap plastic, even if it is water resistant.
P.S. Rugged does not mean Hummer. Its not that hard. Now go fix the Wrangler JK.

CherokeeKid:

Well said waffle911, too bad Jeep styling is going to the dogs. Is the idea of a GOOD product less important than a cheap product? Quality and reliability should be the #1 concern, or do they want you to trade it in every 2 years so they can build new ones.

I'm a Cherokee guy that has over 300K miles on it. Plan on keeping it for another 20K or so. Hoping things improve. I don't have many options if this thing gives up the ghost. I want to stay Jeep, but.........

Snacky:

paint it yellow and this will look like one of the BOB THE BUILDER characters. it'll be cool if they come out with the MYSTERY MOBILE van from SCOOBY DOO too!

I love my 2002 Jeep Liberty Limited Edition - except that it is a pig on gas and really a "girlie" SUV - I laugh when I see men driving such a cute looking SUV - it is high enough to meet any drive through window - especially the bank machines - I have raked up the kms....I have 250,000 on my 2002 and keep pulling my boat and the camper every summer - a few recalls have been done on the suspension (thank goodness) - it drives like a pick up

Only problem lately is this loud ping sound when it idles - what is that????

Colours are too limited too...

It is cute - I love my Liberty...

:)

boogster:

Looks more like a next-gen Commander.

is this their way of bringing back the old classic Cherokee...then why dont they just bring back the real deal...If I had my way..I would just driver the old style Cherokees forever! best all around vehicle ever made! Too bad Jeep is obsessed with destroying what worked for them...grrr
JEEP!!!

Dar:

SHUT THE HELL UP!

Listen. I just purchased a 2008 Liberty Sport 4x2. Before you all go bashing this vehicle with only pictures to judge it by, GO DRIVE IT. I was a huge Cherokee fan, and I too was outraged when they ditched the Cherokee for the Liberty, as my opinon of the previous Liberty was pretty cut and dry: "A girls SUV".

I ended up driving the '08 after renting it for a friend, and fell in love with the damn thing. It feels like a close relative of the Cherokee.

You can bash it all you want, but you'll never know what it's really all about until you drive it and you feel the solid ride, the tight suspension, the awesome performance... So shut your mouths, go drive one, and then come here and give an educated opinion..

Wayne brady:

Maybe you fags should look up the fact that the jeep liberty is built on the strongest frame in the history of jeep. It may look cute but it can four wheel drive the fuck out of your old shitty cherokees or anything toyota or ford could throw at it. Maybe you pussys should stick with your girly (comparable to child's power wheels jeeps) jeep wranglers. And for the guys who own jeep libertys and say that they think its cute, Grow a fucking pair for christ sake. The Man Made the truck, the truck never made the Man you self concious pussys

paul:

If he adopts the same platform as the dodge nitro, he is necessarily beautiful this machine, I prefer his style than the style of the Cherokee.

JEFF:

look don't knock the liberty i wish i had waited my but my cherokee couldn't wait with 338,000 miles started giving me some trouble first time for everything it was worn out. i loved it i looked at the liberty but like everybody else it's too girlish my wife said no, i then looked at the dodge nitro and loved it i really like my nitro it handles great and does everything my cherokee did even more i wish i had waited for the new liberty i like it better. so give the liberty or the nitro a try you'll love it i do.
