Does Toyota Really Need a Car Smaller than the Yaris in the U.S.?

There have been rumors circulating since last September that Toyota is planning on introducing a car smaller than the Yaris to compete with the upcoming Smart, in the U.S. Well spy photographers have noticed a few Peugeot 107's driving around Michigan.

It is interesting since in Europe, Peugeot, Citroen and Toyota have a partnership that produces this car, the Citroen C1 and the Toyota Aygo. Toyota has a technical center in Ann Arbor near where these cars have been spotted. This car could be serving as a test mule for the upcoming Toyota that is rumored to be coming here in 2008. The current Aygo has a 1.0L 3-cylinder engine that produces 50hp.

Does Toyota really need a car smaller than a Yaris in the U.S.? It's a cute car and would be a great gas saver if they offered it with the diesel  engine that is offered in Europe. Although it does look bigger than the SMART.Toyota_aygo Peugeot_107_side Peugeot_107_rear

This car is probably targeted for the younger crowd that isnt overweight. Its price, fuel economy and toyota reliability will definitely be its selling points.

The diesel version of the Aygo is a waste of time. It does 64Miles Per Gallon (UK gallon) as opposed to 60MPG for the petrol version, and costs more to buy. Plus, although they both produce 109g/CO2, the Diesel produces more NOx and lung damaging particles !
The petrol Engine is a real Toyota unit, the Diesel is a Peugeot, and they are not very good. Trust me, I live in France, and see a lot of Peugeots....

One thing to keep in mind is that several automakers have technical centers in SE Michigan even Ann Arbor. Even been down by Ann Arbor airport? Several European and Japanese companies have tech centers there as well...just sayin'...

IQ is a car I'm waiting for . Yaris would be still Ok but with European engine version 1300 cm
The big Oil company are not allowing small cars (engines) on the market because they want sell illegally expensive fuel
Americans do not travel across America ,no time and no money to do that ,the car is for commuting between work to home and shopping
There are some people who will not fit to small cars but American population is changing eating habits I guess
