2008 HUMMER H3 Gets More Power....Finally!

HUMMER has finally addressed a major problem with the H3, a lack of power. Since its intro the SUV has only had a 5-cylinder engine that was borrowed from the GMC Canyon/ Chevy Colorado trucks.

They gave it a small boost recently, but it still wasn't enough to move the SUV. This lack of an actual V-6 or V-8 engine has hurt sales.

For 2008 the H3 Alpha will offer a 5.3L V-8 with 295 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque, vs. the 242 horsepower of the 5-cylinder. Maximum towing capacity has also moved up to 6,000 pounds. The SUV still has to make due with a 4-speed auto and no manual is being offered. It's interesting that they dont have an auto with at least 5-speeds.

Pope Xavier DCLXVI:

Maybe it was the fact that you get ~0 mpg in a Hummer that has hurt sales? Or could it be the really appealing "design" with the very stylish "curves"?

I vote for the make Hummers illegal law to be enacted.

HAHA

as if SUV drivers care about that "Green Effect" non-sense.

they only way that "gas guzzling" vehicles effect mainstream consumers is economics. Most people in "normal" states with "normal" jobs don't believe in that quazi-religious Al Gore crap.

If a driver has to pay $5000 more in gas over the life of the vehicle for a $10000 less expensive vehicle that has 200 more HP, I call that saving $5000. That doesn't even figure in towing, cargo space, and performance.

I think that the H3 should be offered with the LS2 6.0 engine like a TBSS! or better yet a 6.2 L superchared engine from the blue devil corvette. Call it a HUMMER SS! LMAO. Maybe 3 MPG if you dont drive too hard. and ya know what? If somebody wants to pay that much in gas money to drive like a bat outa He!! in a tank like a Hummer, they should be able to do so. The only limits there should be are the size of your wallet.

And if everyone drove Hummer SS ya know what else? Gas would be $10 a gallon even if there wasn't a war. So people couldn't afford to drive the hummer. After the bozos that have too much car/truck for their on good sell and buy an econobox everything will normalize.
Again economics will fix it.

The main point is that the V8 hummer is for people that have excess income.

So stop ur greeny griping.

I will keep my big engine and leaded foot.

Why hasn't the NSA marked it as a threat to national security?

No surprise the greedy children who drive these things are totally self absorbed. Like Cheney their kids have lawyers so they wont' die for oil, while the masses die everyday.

There are less expensive way of showing to the world that everything revolves around you.

It would be neat to see a hybrid Hummer. It would be even neater if there was a fuel cell Hummer. :) (cool to me anyway).

I think the H4 should be the size of the Chevy Blazer and the H5 should be the size of the Chevy Sidekick. :) It would give people a Hummer but with better gas mileage. :)

Christopher L. Estep:

With all the potshots taken at the HUMMER models in general (and the H2/H3 in particular) there are several things that the pot-shot artistes need to remember:

1. Unlike the original HWMMV (which gave birth to the original Hummer H1) the H2 and H3 are based on existing GM platforms (the H2 on the YukonXL/TrailBlazer/Escalade platform, and the H3 on the GM S-series truck/SUV platform used by the Chevy/GMC S-series pickups and the Chevy Tahoe, among other smaller conventional SUVs).

2. The cancellation of the H1 was done specifically to free up the assembly line for more military (HWMMV) production; neither the H2 or H3 has a military counterpart.

3. Neither the H2 or H3 is priced that much above its (largely import) competition from Nissan (Pathfinder/XTerra/Armada), Toyota (RAV4/Highlander/original LandCruiser), or Honda (Pilot/Element), let alone Land Rover (Discovery/LR3). You ignore the SUV market at your peril.

4. Also, has *anyone* actually compared the H3 Alpha in terms of fuel economy to the other SUVs in its size/price range?

5. Lastly, the SUV market is similar in a lot of ways to the old full-size passenger-van market, except that these owners often find themselves needing to tow vehicles (boats, trailers, etc.) or traverse atypical terrian (due to the increased number of weather-related incidents in the past several years throughout the United States, there is increased demand for a vehicle that can take not merely bad roads, but a complete lack of roads in stride); in other words, versatility (not to mention crash safety) is trumping fuel economy. Also, the current typically-equipped H3 Alpha is priced no more (and is often less) than the Toyota Highlander, let alone the LandCruiser (and that's before you try to bring up the Highlander or LC to match the manifest of the H3 Alpha for a true apples-to-apples comparison).

Hummers should be illegal. Damn GM and anyone who owns one.
