2008 Ford Flex (aka Ford Fairlane Concept) will be Unveiled Next Month

Ford has announced that they are finally going to show the production version of the Fairlane concept at the New York Auto show next month. They decided to not keep the Fairlane name and instead rename the new car, the Ford Flex.

This car will compete primarily with the Saturn Outlook, Mazda CX-9, GMC Acadia, Hyundai Veracruz.

The Flex is Ford's minivan replacement and will be sold beside the new Ford X (Freestyle) and the new Edge. The main difference is that the Flex will have three rows of seats and suicide doors (possibly). As minivan sales continue to decline, automakers are trying to figure out alternatives. The Flex is expected to look very close to the Fairlane concept.

Ford is hoping to sale 100,000 of these per year and will most likely make Lincoln and Mercury versions of it.

I think the thing that is killing off mini vans is the high price and lack of original styling. I think the Flex will have a chance since the styling is more SUV than minivan.

Jeff:

bring it on, bring back the station wagon, Pleeeeeeeeeeeeease!

Looks good. Just don't trick it up so much that a base model costs $30,000. a PLAIN JANE 2wd version oughta be reachable for $20,000 if you want to make the scionB finally go away.

If it's as expensive, heavy and as hard on gas as the Freestyle then forget it. Just give me a "taurus" wagon????

thanks, Ford!
