2008 BMW M3 Will Have a 420 Horsepower V8

BMW has just released details of the engine in the upcoming 2008 BMW M3. They showed a concept version of the car at the Geneva Auto Show. Now they are giving us full details on the engine in the production version.

The car will feature a 4.0L V8 producing 420 hp and 295 lb-ft. of torque at 3,900 rpm that is derived from the V10 in the M5 and M6. 85% of the torque is available at 2,000 rpm. The engine also features Double Vanos valve technology which allows the car to rev up to 8,300 rpm. Lastly the engine only weighs 445 lbs, 33lbs less than the base 3-Series inline six.

Should be a great competitor to the Audi RS4 and C-Class AMG.2008_m3_concept_fr_2 2008_m3_engine_4

Jaron:

I have been waiting for this type of stock power for the M3. I will be purchasing this in the near future. I wonder if they will release additional performance parts for the aftermarket community, supercharger, headers, exhaust, brakes, at the time of launch. I heard it does 0-62 in 4.5 sec. Hopefully this is conservative numbers. WOuld be nice to see 3.9 -4.2 sec from 0 -60. What is the top speed without the chip regulator that keeps it from going abouve 155?

jiminmpls:

It looks like a 1995 Grand Am!

Both the 3 and 5 Series have gotten sooooo ugly.

True:

It looks like the M3 is trying to beat the new LS-F engine...pathetic

Plus only 295 lb-ft?
