Pontiac's new 2008 G8 sports sedan has been revealed. The car is based on (rebadged) the Holden Commodore, which is sold in Australia.
Fortunately this will replace the ugly Grand Prix when it hits showrooms this August.
The car will come with two engine choices: 261 horsepower 3.6L V6 or the 362 horsepower 6.0L V8 that will be offered in the GT version. There will also be three transmission choices: five-speed auto in the base model and either a six-speed auto or six-speed manual in the GT.
The car rides on the same platform as the new 2009 Chevy Camaro and the next Chevy Impala.
All that I have to say is WOW! Between all three of the American brands, GM seems to be the brand with the most notable turn around. This and the new Chevy Malibu should help them turn things around, as long as the quality is up to par.

This is car is evidence as to why redneck's should not have money. It is totally lacking in any sophistication. It is gaudy, rediculous, and God forbid anyone be seen driving the thing. But, that's a Pontiac for ya!

When I first saw the Holden Commodore, it made me want to finally own a big muscle car. Even with Pontiac's re-badging, this car looks great and finally, something powerful without looking like a little cheesy toyish Chevrolet something.

I see comments like the one that Cool Breeze left all the time. I just think that he probably feels very threatened by a new American car with big V8's and RWD but can still get 30mpg. I am not sure what he would consider to be sophisticated, I guess some hatch back Honda, who knows. Oh it just hit me... he is mad because he realized that he spent way too much on his car and should have bought a GM nameplate.

well a couple things first of all this aint no stupid little grand prix friggin mommys car this has more juice to put that little thing to sleep and another its not somthing someone should buy as a true muscle car its got muscle yes but its not a "muscle" car. and i dont know what you were thinkin talkin about rednecks building this car, its 2 inches off the ground stock 17 inch rims a low profile tires id be surprised if a true redneck to start it let alone build it.. rednecks stay true to their 89 ford!

Say goodbye to Ford and Mopar dominating the muscle car market. Patients is a virtue. Its a long time coming, but I believe GM has a few tricks up their sleeve to not be a muscle car copycat. Re-incarnation of the Firebird? 4 door GTO? Whatever you call it, it's truly awesome. Its about time. I'm so tired of seeing "Muscle Cars" with the engine pointing the wrong direction. Muscle Car= RWD.

This definiely looks like significant move forward for GM. I owned a brand new '66 Pontiac LeMans with a 326, four speed and bucket seats. This is the first Pontiac I've considered since then. Their cheesy add on stuff, front wheel drive, dorky tail lights.....the list goes on, have all argued against favoring Pontiac. Add the huge depreciation on top of all the drawbacks and there hasn't been much to want.
This car excites me. That Corvette engine (a little after markettweaking ought to be good for an added 50 hp or so) is sweet indeed. My wife will like roominess and comfortable GM 8way seats and the dual zone climate control.
I recenting drove a BMW545 for 500 miles. Fun! I expect this car to be comparable in handling and superior in performance. Not bad for $35K. Doubling the recomended cornering speed should be fun.

Hehehe...It only looks ugly when Pontiac put their sylings to things. Pontiacs are ugly no matter what they are.
The Australian Commodore S , SS and SSV vehicles are far nicer to look at. Also, these cars add handling AND ride comfort to the Pontiac brand . Unfortuately US car makers tend to overlook handling as a 'must have' in any design brief. These cars come loaded with coilovers. Any Mustang will be smoked easily especially point to point. Then again, any half decently sorted road car should be able to leave a Mustang behind in the twisty stuff.
I'd even go as to far as to say that this car will be a better handling vehicle than the current Corvette. I drove a Corvette this year for a while and it was a fairly inaccurate and uncomfortable thing . (but still streets ahead of any 'Stang').
When they're released (..and provided Pontiac haven't tried to Americanise the suspension again as they did with the GTO), go try the G8 ....they're an amazingly satisfying car to drive.
If Pontiac decide to 'dumb down' the suspension from Holden spec again...it'll just feel like any other american 'sports' car...which would be a real pity

Well, Idk if they're making a coupe too, but I think there needs to be. Otherwise, this is a pretty decent looking car. I also liked the gto, but w/e. All cars nowadays are bubbles, so this is, seemingly, as agressive as appearance gets. Nice job gm, you finally may have redeemed youselves after droping the f-body.

all the people that hate it hate it because they cant afford it and they cant handle the power, so they would rather drive their 215hp Bevarian Motor Wreck that they overpaid for or their glorified chrysler (mercedes) that break on a daily basis. its ok we understand you cant handle it.

WOW could this car look anymore like the new BMW M3? I know BMW is the best and every other car company needs to copy them but it would be nice to see a little origanallity, instead of just copying the best in the bizz-BMW!!

Quoting 'FORD IS No. 1': "This G8 is sooooooooooooo ugly good try GM Ponticrap but FORD Mustang (real muscle car) craps all this and I can afford ten of them..."
What are you talking about? The G8 is far more car that the Stang in EVERY way. I have an '06 GTO and I have never come across a Stang I cannot dust - stock vs stock, the Stang moves like it is stuck in 1st gear! Now, let's be clear, I like Ford's too, but to call the Mustang a real muscle car and exclude anything Pontiac has to offer just shows your ignorance of the facts.

This is really a good thing for GM. They should bring back the Impala, Chevelle, Caprice (which the Pontiac G8 is in Dubai), just give them different styling and they would all sell like hotcakes. Also don't worry about these other haters of the G8, none of them can spell. It displays their intelligence.

HA!
The G8 replacing the Grand Prix, now that's something to laught about. they said the same thing about the G6 when it came out.
If you're a true Pontiac man like i am you would know that back in '03 Pontiac was going to cut out the Grand Prix and replace it with the G6, but the G6 was having problems or kinks that they had to work out. there was already a concept car that had no name on it, it would either be called the new Bonneville or Grand Prix, they opted fot the Grand Prix completely changing everything. It offered the spacious interior of the Bonneville, but the light body of the Grand Am. and BAAM sales went through the roof, but the Bonneville lost so many sales. Word spread quick that the G6 was coming but that it was a car ultimately designed for women, just like the Scion TC, if you don't believe me look it up. that's why the trunk is opened by just laying your finger next to it. prevents girls from breaking their cute lil nails. Lmao.
but the real sad new is that the G8 is here to replace one of the Ponty's, toss up between the Grand Prix and the Bonneville. by the way everyone, the G8 offers a heavy and sluggish body, but slam that accelerator and you'll feel that 6.0L slam you to the back of the seat. i know. i work for Pontiac, test drove it baby. but feels sluggish at slow speeds. now personally i would not trade my Grand Prix GTP, why would i when my supercharged 3.8L is pushing 423 ponies, so far from the 260 stock. haven't found a Stang that can do better than me in the track. and if you're up for a challenge i'm the guy with the Grand Prix in the Joliet speedway every first sunday of the month, you'll find it, it's the only one that says "great white shark" on it

This car is a show stopper! I stopped and looked at one at the dealership and this might be my next purchase. I own a 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP and I love the car. But I do not care for the new body style. It reminds me of a Bonneville.
Pictures don't do this car justice. You have to see it for yourself.

I must agree with Lino. I was raised Pontiac. I've driven Bonnevilles, Firebirds, Grand Ams, and Grand Prix's. I've also had experience with just about everything else. I'd personally like to see the G8 with a revamped 3.8L Fireball V6. The G8 promises a future for Pontiac in the GM lineup.
About Cool Breezes' comment: Redneck's don't buy cars like this. Redneck's drive trucks and muscle cars that need a shit-ton of body work. God forbid anyone be seen driving a new Mustang..
To Rebecca: Ugly my @$$. The Grand Prix has and always will be the Bonneville wannabe (No offense James&Lino).
To ALex: BMW can't touch this, and BMW stinx anyways. The only good thing that comes from foreign cars like BMW are scrap metal and lots of crunched plastic body panels. BMW costs way to much. I'd rather pay pocketchange for a G8 than waste money for a car thats a Babbling Mechanical Wreck (BMW).
To FORD IS No. 1: Ford isnt number one. In 2007 GM sold more vehicles than even Toyota. In fact, FORD came in THIRD place behind GM and Toyota, and truthfully, THEY ALWAYS WILL!!
You know what the problem is with Fords? All of them sound like a box of rocks when they idle, and ride rougher than slicks on gravel. Frequent Overhaul, Rapid Deterioration (FORD).
To Gerard: It looks like the interior in my old 1998 SSEi. And BTW who in their right mind compares a Pontiac to a Civic? Know what I Had One and Never Did Again (HONDA).
Don't make bad comments about what I've said unless you're an idiot. I've done everything from SCCA to Rally to Bullruns. A good Pontiac like the G8 is worthy of every racing event and as simple means as daily driving.

I must say, I am proud of pontiac. They have finally put out a vehicle with a distinctive and muscle-esque looking front end. The back end is kind of cookie cutter 2000's styling, but you can't win them all. I own a older model Benz which is a fantastic car but as a luxury sedan it doesn't have the same punch as a sports car. I wouldn't go so far to say that the G8 is a muscle car, Pontiac took themselves out of that race when they made that ugly GTO a few years back. The G8 is an excellent example of a sports sedan, something that appeals to a much broader base. My brand loyalty is to GM and specifically Chevrolet, but when I sell my Benz I'm getting this G8, Corvettes are out of my range. Do I think Pontiac finally made a good one? Yes I do.
